JD PicKell: Evaluating Jahmyr Gibbs’ place in Alabama offense
Alabama had solid production from the running back position last season but after adding Jahmyr Gibbs from the transfer portal, it’s expected to take off. Considered one of the top backs in the ACC last season, he is now expected to be a star in the SEC. Especially in the Crimson Tide’s offense.
On3’s J.D. PicKell laid out how Gibbs will fit in with Alabama, saying he is a “very complete” player. He spoke about what he does well from the running back position and even as a receiver. Bill O’Brien will have one of the top weapons in college football, PicKell thinks the versatility will be key.
“For a lot of people (Gibbs) was the best player in the ACC a year ago,” said PicKell. “Henry To’o To’o, the linebacker for Alabama, said ‘I’ve never guarded a back like him.’ Essentially just said Jahymr Gibbs is special. They don’t make them like Jahmyr Gibbs. He’s about 5-11, 200 pounds. Really smooth runner, not afraid of contact, great patience, great vision.
“Very complete is the word that comes to mind. He’s also a threat in the pass game. You can split him out in the slot and have him go one on one with a linebacker and feel good about him winning that matchup. So the word that comes to mind in addition to completeness is versatility.”

J.D. PicKell says Alabama’s offense will be better with Jahmyr Gibbs
PicKell went on the make a bold statement, saying the Alabama offense is going to be even better with Gibbs in the lineup. Having Bryce Young returning for another season helps but two key receivers — John Metchie and Jameson Williams — are off to the NFL. It might be a tough task but the On3 expert thinks it’s possible.
“He’s going to add a whole new element to this offense and they are going to spoon feed him the football. Jahmyr Gibbs will see the rock early and often and Alabama’s offense will be even better because of it. That’s with returning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young playing quarterback. Give him a new toy in Jahymr Gibbs. A lot of reason for excitement around him.”
