Alabama softball adds Lance McMahon to staff as assistant coach
Since the season ended in Tuscaloosa, there has been a ton of turnover for Alabama softball. Whether it’s through the transfer portal or on the coaching staff, the Crimson Tide are going to look different on the diamond this season.
On Tuesday, the latest change occurred, with Lance McMahon being announced as a new assistant coach. His primary position will be working with pitchers. McMahon has spent the last six seasons at Illinois, where the Fighting Illini have had a sub-3.00 ERA over the past three seasons.
Head coach Patrick Murphy released a statement on McMahon joining the staff, crediting the new assistant coach for his previous work. He said working with Illinois last season has “prepared him” to work in Tuscaloosa as Alabama looks for revenge in the 2023 season.

“We are very excited to welcome Lance to the Alabama softball family,” Murphy said. “He has done great things at Illinois and we look forward to having him work with our pitchers. His experiences in Champaign and at LSU, Mizzou, and the NPF have more than prepared him for this position.”
McMahon does have some coaching experience in the conference, serving as a graduate assistant at LSU. The Tigers went to the Women’s College World Series twice while he was in Baton Rouge. Attending Missouri for undergrad and serving as a student assistant as well, McMahon is familiar with the SEC.

Lance McMahon ‘excited’ to join Alabama staff
Calling it a “dream” to coach in the SEC, McMahon is excited to be in Tuscaloosa. McMahon says he has similar values to Murphy and will want to compete on and off the field with the Crimson Tide.
“Having degrees from two different SEC member institutions, it was always my dream to coach in the SEC and I would like to thank Alabama Head Coach Patrick Murphy for making that dream a reality,” McMahon said. “It was clear from our early conversations that we had similar values and are invested in building relationships in pursuit of competitive excellence both on and off the field for our student-athletes. It is my absolute privilege to join the rest of the staff here and compete in the best softball conference in the country.”
Alabama will have some talent returning, mainly pitcher Montana Fouts. She will work with McMahon throughout the entire season, hoping to return to Oklahoma City and win the program’s second-ever national championship.
