Cameron Latu in uniform, going through warmups for Alabama
When Cameron Latu suffered an injury for Alabama during fall camp, the tight end room was considered thin. Quarterback Bryce Young connected well with the position group last season, helping the Crimson Tide have an explosive year. Now, to begin the 2022 season there are some questions.
However, Latu has a chance to play in Saturday’s opener against Utah State. While Alabama was going through pregame warmups, the tight end was spotted in uniform. Even more so, Latu was also the first person walking out of the tunnel behind head coach Nick Saban.
Even for a game such as Utah State, having Latu back in the lineup would be huge for Alabama. Him and Young are expected to be one of the top duos in the SEC this season and getting the ball rolling early would be nothing but positive.

When healthy, Latu is considered the starter for Alabama at tight end. There was some turnover at the position this offseason, with Jahleel Billingsley leaving in the transfer portal. There was even some thought somebody would be brought into Tuscaloosa through the portal. Nonetheless, Saban liked what he had with Latu.
Entering his redshirt senior season, Latu started all 15 games for Alabama last year. He set the Alabama tight end record for single-season touchdowns, having eight. The hope is for some improvement once fully healthy.

Cameron Latu not only offensive weapon with injury problems
Alabama receiver Tyler Harrell was dealing with an injury in the time leading up to their season opener and is wearing a boot before the game. Harrell was a big addition from the transfer portal for Alabama out of Louisville but was unable to participate in a full training camp with the team after suffering a sprained foot.
As the season drew closer, head coach Nick Saban shared that Harrell was getting more and more work during practice and was gaining confidence in a return to the field. Unfortunately, it appears that this week will not be the one he returns.
“I have not seen Tyler Harrell in warm-ups for Alabama,” explained AL.com’s Mike Rodak before the game. “He was dealing with a foot sprain for most of camp.”
As the game drew closer, Rodak provided another update — showing that Harrell was not going to be available for Alabama in their season opener.
“Tyler Harrell is standing on the sidelines in sweatpants with a walking boot on his right foot.”
