Malachi Moore describes the changes between Nick Saban, Kalen DeBoer
Alabama will look different on the sidelines at head coach this year for the first time since 2006 as Kalen DeBoer takes center stage following the retirement of Nick Saban. But on the field this upcoming season the Crimson Tide will look the same as last year in several ways, including at the safety position with Malachi Moore returning to Tuscaloosa for his fifth and final season.
Moore spent the entirety of his Alabama career under Saban before DeBoer took over the reins of the program, and at SEC Media Days on Wednesday, he was asked about how the coaches differ in their philosophies.
“Coach Saban and Coach DeBoer, they have two different coaching styles,” Moore said. “Both of them work and both of them are very effective, but like I said, they just have two different ways about going about it.”
There’s no doubt that Saban and DeBoer do have a winning pedigree in common despite them going about their business differently with their coaching styles. With Saban boasting a seven national titles, 11 SEC Championships, and an impressive 292–71–1 overall record as a collegiate head coach. A resume that most believe make Saban the greatest of all time.
DeBoer’s resume doesn’t rival Saban’s (like every other college football coach across history), but his ability to win is undeniable. Winning at every single one of his head coaching stops as he’s progressed through the ranks from NAIA powerhouse Sioux Falls, Fresno State, and Washington with an impressive 104–12 in his career.

But when it comes to DeBoer’s coaching style, he’s achieved that success through his offensive expertise and more of a hands off approach. Differing from Saban’s defensive background and reputation as a stern and demanding leader.
“Coach DeBoer is kind of more of a player-led type of coach, kind of lets his players take over and lead a team. When he has things to say, he definitely voices his opinion and lets it be known when things are on his mind,” Moore explained.
All eyes will be on DeBoer this season to see if he can uphold the lofty standards that have been laid down by Saban and are expected from Alabama’s fanbase and program. But it’s clear that he wont do it alone. As players like Moore, offensive lineman Tyler Booker, and quarterback Jalen Milroe will clearly have a strong influence on the leadership and success of this year’s Alabama team given the style of their new head man in charge.
