Bryce Young recalls the involvement of Texas during his recruitment ahead of Week 2 matchup
Alabama quarterback Bryce Young was one of the highest recruited quarterbacks ever out of Mater Dei high school in California, ranked the No. 1 player in the state and the No. 1 quarterback in the country in his 2020 class according to On3 Consensus. Young had offers from just about every high-profile program in the country, including Texas, who the Crimson Tide face this week.
Young reflected on his recruitment from the Longhorns and spoke about their upcoming marquee matchup.
“Yeah I was recruited by University of Texas back when I was still in high school and I visited and again we have a ton of respect for them as a program for the coaching staff, for the players. We understand again the challenge that it’s gonna be, so from there you cut on the film, you know about that program, we know what it takes,” Young said.

If you cut on the film of Young from his last game, you’d see an absolutely dominant performance out of him, as he threw for 195 yards and 5 touchdown passes along with 100 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground before being pulled early in the third quarter of their game versus Utah State.
The Crimson Tide routed the Aggies in a 55-0 victory, but the Longhorns are coming off of a 50-point outing themselves, as they took care of business in their opening game versus Louisiana-Monroe winning 52-10.
“We know it’s going to take everything from us, so it’s on us to make sure we’re the most prepared we can be, put ourselves in the best circumstance from preparation this week and we’ll try to execute to the best of our ability,” Young said.
This matchup has been one of the most highly anticipated in college football this offseason, and the stakes have only been raised after the two teams’ dominant week 1 performances. It will surely be an important week of preparation from both sides, as Young and the Tide take on the Longhorns this Saturday at noon in Austin.

Nick Saban discusses increased leadership role for Bryce Young in 2022
Alabama head coach Nick Saban made a recent appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter with Jackson State head coach Deon Sanders. ESPN’s Sage Steele asked Saban about his Heisman trophy winning quarterback Bryce Young and specifically his leadership heading into this season.
“Well I think people forget that Bryce was a first year starter last year, so sometimes you don’t feel like when you’re a new guy, a new starter, that you should really be taking the bull by the horns and being the kind of leader that impacts and effects other people, especially when there’s a lot of old player around you,” Saban said.
On the field Young was undeniable last season, breaking the school single season passing yards and touchdowns record putting up a monster 4,872 yards and 47 touchdowns for the Tide. But as a leader, Young had some room for growth, and Saban believes he did grow and will have a different mentality this upcoming season.
“I think this year he’s got a completely different disposition when it comes to that, he’s done a really really good job of effecting the players around him in a really positive way. He’s had a great attitude about continuing to try to improve and get better. He’s not satisfied at all with where he was, and where he is, and where the team is so I think those are all positive factors for us,” Saban said.
Alabama enters the season with the top preseason ranking at No.1, as they bring back one of the most talented rosters in college football. Young taking his game to another level would be extraordinary, but if he can take his leadership to the next level, then the Tide could be an even bigger force nationally then they already are.
