Paul Finebaum: No Alabama quarterbacks entering transfer portal is 'really surprising'
Alabama has quite the quarterback room at this point and Paul Finebaum was surprised no signal caller entered the NCAA transfer portal.
Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson were head-to-head over the course of the spring and now have a third contender in the quarterback race. Tyler Buchner transferred from Notre Dame and reunited with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.
That really led to some surprise for Finebaum, who joined McElroy and Cubelic.
“I think in some ways it’s shocking,” Finebaum said. “And you guys need to help me with my math but right now I think there’s five quarter five scholarship quarterbacks on the Alabama roster. I’ll defer to Greg and anyone who’s ever played the game to tell me how that works. In just seven on sevens and ultimately in fall camp, it doesn’t seem like a great situation. And it’s really surprising. I have no earthly idea why somebody didn’t choose to go unless it just wasn’t a very good time to go. And that could very well be the explanation. There’s not a lot of great opportunities in late April, early May.”
McElroy opened up about the competition aspect of the quarterback room. Ultimately, no one has the edge yet so everyone’s locked in on Alabama.

“And I guess I’m not there but when you have that many people that are still in the running, if you could, you could dig into the cliche book of having more than one quarterback and everyone knows where I’m going there,” Finebaum said. “But it will be fascinating. After not having a quarterback battle in many, many years. All eyes will be on Tuscaloosa.”
Tyler Buchner transfers to Alabama
Buchner is the new guy but started last season for the Fighting Irish. But after Notre Dame landed Sam Hartman from Wake Forest, his prospects didn’t look great for 2023.
Now at Alabama with every quarterback remaining, it’ll be quite the battle.
“I love Notre Dame,” Buchner said on Tuesday, via Twitter. “The people, and especially my teammates, are what makes this play special to me. I have decided to enter the transfer portal in order to explore my options, and decide what is best for my future. After discussions with coach Freeman, remaining at Notre Dame is thankfully an option I’m going to consider. I am truly thankful to everyone for their support during this process.”
