Saturday night was LSU head coach Ed Orgeron’s final appearance in Tuscaloosa in his current capacity, and it was a memorable one for the wrong reasons.

Following a 20-14 loss at the hands of Alabama, the Crimson Tide took to Twitter to send Orgeron a snarky farewell.

While the Tide got the last laugh, LSU’s performance was one of the more shocking of the weekend. They went into Bryant-Denny Stadium as a 28.5-point underdog, and everyone outside of the LSU locker room had written them off. They left with a very respectable loss despite falling to 4-5 on the season.

Including his stint as interim head coach in 2016, Orgeron finished his tenure in Baton Rouge 1-5 against Alabama. The lone win came in 2019, the year LSU went 15-0 and won the national championship. Alabama shut out LSU in both 2016 and 2018, and their average margin of victory in the five wins was nearly 20 points.

Tide defense smothered Tigers last weekend

While the offensive performance was one Crimson Tide fans would like to forget, their defense looked stout and held the Tigers to a season-low 14 points.

Linebacker Will Anderson had 12 tackles, four tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and 1.5 sacks en route to being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. Both linebacker Henry To’o To’o and safety Jordan Battle added nine tackles to their 2021 totals.

Jayln Armour-Davis picked off LSU quarterback Max Johnson, and Phidarian Mathis recovered a fumble forced by To’o To’o. Alabama scored 14 points off of the turnovers.

Through nine games, Alabama is allowing 307.2 yards per game (second in the SEC) and 19.9 points per game (fourth in the SEC). They have not finished a season allowing more than 20 points per game since 2007.

The three remaining offenses on the Tide’s schedule are beatable, with the only glaring concern being an Arkansas run game which leads the SEC with 243.8 rushing yards per contest.

Alabama’s next test is a 1-8 New Mexico State team over which they are a 51.5-point favorite. Saturday’s game starts at 11:00 a.m. CT on the SEC Network.
