Alabama baseball battled with No. 1 LSU in Baton Rouge in the final game of their weekend series. The Crimson Tide lost the game on Sunday in a high-scoring affair, 13-11. Things took a serious turn at the bottom of the seventh inning, with a concerning moment regarding junior catcher Mac Guscette.

After being hit by a pitch under his mask, Guscette passed out on the field. It seemed as though the situation was handled, though, as Alabama reported that he would be exiting the game under the advisement of their athletic staff. On Sunday evening, On3’s Nick de la Torre tweeted out an update on the Alabama catcher, which explains the injury in more detail.

Check out what Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon had to say. It’s good news.

Brad Bohannon gave an update on Mac Guscette following the game. “He took a direct blow to the throat on a pitch that was thrown in the dirt. He’s alert and doing well. They’ll run some tests to make sure he’s ok. With the information we have that I have, we think that Mac is going to be ok,” Bohannon said.

Guscette is in his first season with the Tide after playing the first two seasons of his career at Florida. In Sunday’s game, he hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to give Alabama a 7-3 lead. During Guscette’s career with the Florida Gators, he played in 57 career games, with 46 starts. In the 2022 season, he batted .238 with four doubles, five home runs, 18 RBIs, and 15 runs scored.

Guscette played his high school baseball for Venice High School (Venice, Florida). He was rated as the No. 14 overall prospect in the state of Florida by Perfect Game. Guscette was also rated as the No. 6 catcher in the nation. The Florida native earned a spot in the 2019 Perfect Game All-American Classic. During his junior season, he batted .351 with 19 RBIs.

The two offenses combined for 24 runs and 20 hits with at least one team scoring in all nine innings in Sunday’s matchup. There were six home runs total in the game. Both teams combined to score nine runs in the fifth inning, the highest scoring inning of the game.

Following the win, LSU moved to 35-8 overall and 15-5 in the SEC on the 2023 campaign. Alabama dropped to 30-15 overall and 9-12 in the SEC.
