Despite losing his top receivers to the NFL over the offseason, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young has been impressed with how his younger, more inexperienced wide receivers have played so far this spring.

“The young guys that have come in they, they’ve all been really hungry and I think that’s something that we really appreciate here are guys that come in ready to work wanting to take every rep, wanting to get coached, being able to receive coaching,” Young said. “It’s a complicated offensive at first when you just come from high school and there’s going to be adjustments, you know there’s going to be guys that run the wrong route or maybe make a poor read on a route, whatever it may be.

“But what I love about this young group is everything they do, they do it full speed and when they mess up, there’s no finger pointing. There’s no blaming, they come back and they want to get coached.”

While Young didn’t name any specific receivers, incoming players Kendrick Law and Aaron Anderson are getting their first taste of what it’s like to be a part of the nation’s premier football program, while Ja’Corey Brooks, Christian Leary and JoJo Earle are getting the hang of it as year two approaches. All five of which Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban thinks can be the next guy, but doesn’t want to rush things with these blue-chip athletes.

“I think the most important thing is that young players focus on development and they don’t worry so much about what team they’re on, who’s in front of them and who’s behind them,” Saban said. “They just control what they can control and focus on their development.”

Young also spoke about the amount of drops his receivers have been responsible for this spring, though pointed the blame at himself, and is working with each receiver to create the chemistry that will eliminate drops from their offensive repertoire.

Now that John Metchie and Jameson Williams are off to the 2022 NFL Draft, Young is going to have a lot on his plate with a litany of inexperienced wide receivers on the roster, but according to Young, it’s no sweat off his back.

Georgia transfer Jermaine Burton joined the team over the offseason, while the likes of Ja’Corey Brooks and Traeshon Holden will be looking to benefit the Heisman Trophy award winner as well.

“It’s great for me and for everyone on offense to see a mistake made from young receiver on the first or second day of practice and see it get corrected the next practice,” Young said. “I think they’re all trending in the right direction. They’re all growing and getting better and really, I think it’s their mindset that’s been pushing them, so I’m super excited for all the potential that they have.”
