Bryce Young leads impressive game-winning drive in final minute, propels Alabama to victory over Texas
The Alabama–Texas showdown — just as everyone predicted — went down to the wire on Saturday. A record crowd was on hand to watch the matchup between the two teams, and they saw a show.
In the end, Bryce Young and the Crimson Tide left Austin with the victory.
After Bert Auburn made the field goal to give Texas the lead, Young and Alabama embarked on a drive to try and win the game. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner made some highlight-reel plays along the way, but didn’t find the end zone.

That meant all came down to the leg of Will Reichard, who — after Steve Sarkisian called timeout to ice him — kicked one right down the middle to give the Crimson Tide a 20-19 lead with 10 seconds to play. It proved to be the game-winner after Texas came up with two empty plays on offense as time expired.
Texas had a 16-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Young led Alabama on a 75-yard drive to eventually find Jahmyr Gibbs for a go-ahead touchdown. But the Longhorns battled back, but left just enough time for Young to lead the game-winning drive.

His coach was certainly impressed, too.
“I think at the end of the day, he did a great job,” Nick Saban said of Young. “When his best was needed, he was really good. That’s what we needed. We didn’t run the ball very well so w had to spread ’em out. Did a good job of moving the ball. Tough call down there on inches to go for it or kick a field goal, but I just felt like we could go two minutes and kick a field goal if we needed to.”
For Texas, the big concern is now the health of quarterback Quinn Ewers, who left the game in the first quarter after suffering a shoulder injury. The Longhorns ruled him out for the game, but the team doesn’t provide injury updates during the game, per Sarkisian’s policy. It’s unclear if Ewers will wind up missing any time as he deals with the injury.
Now, both teams will turn their attention to Week 3. Alabama will prepare to take on Louisiana-Monroe at Bryant Denny Stadium on Sept. 17 while Texas faces off against UTSA at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium.
