Bryce Young on Alabama standard: Never stop reaching for more
After three years in the program now, Alabama quarterback and 2021 Heisman winner Bryce Young understands the Saban Standard pretty well. “Yeah it’s definitely something that’s constant,” he said of the expectations when playing at a place like Alabama when speaking with college football analyst Joel Klatt recently.
“We understand that, you know, there’s so much greatness here. Our standard is so high and, you know, it’s a day-in and day-out process. You can’t be satisfied with success. You can’t feel entitled to it. That’s something that coach tells us and talks to us about all the time. You know, for us, accomplishing our goals isn’t something that we can do over one game or over a span of a week. It’s something that’s every single day, day-in and day-out. And not every day is going to be perfect. But, you know, as long as you’re working and trying to get better, you add a little to that standard every single day.”
So small improvements, day by day, are consistent goals for Young. So that he can reach the bigger goals by the end of the season, like winning the Heisman or the national championship.
“You know, some days maybe you don’t feel like you you reached it. Some days, you feel like you fall short,” said Young. Not every day can be a major success. But enough successful days over the course of a season can lead to those more major accomplishments. And Bryce Young picked Alabama because of that challenge.”

“But, you know, you can’t ever ever give up on that. It’s making sure that we’re not satisfied, we’re not happy. And even if we do accomplish our goal short term, we have to understand that there’s still that Monday or practice that next day, whatever it may be. So, you know, obviously it’s something that’s that’s a little intense being here. But I knew that coming here is what I signed up for. It pushes me personally to be a lot better. Pushes us as a team to be abetter unit. So I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
The Alabama QB adapted Nick Saban’s policy. Even once goals are met, it’s time to get right back to the drawing board and circle the next milestone. No wonder the pair of them had such success together on offense a year ago. Now, time to chase those new goals for Young.
