Bryce Young and Nick Saban have a tremendous relationship on the football field, but the Alabama quarterback revealed he possesses an equally as interesting relationship with the Crimson Tide coach off the field.

During SEC Media Days, Young opened up about his rapport with Saban, and how interesting it is to see a different side of the legendary leader.

“Just being able to build that relationship with Coach, it’s super important for me,” began Young, speaking with Ryan C. Fowler of The Game on 100.9. “Coach, obviously everyone sees Coach on media days, Coach on interviews — he’s very stern. He’s very matter of fact. He’s very much so Coach Saban, as everyone comes to know him. But when you put all that back, and you’re in a different environment and you’re outside of football, he’s really cool to be around.

“You can joke around and you can talk about life with him. So he’s fun just to have conversations with, that have nothing to do with football about. Obviously there’s not too many people that get to have that and get to know that side of him, but once you do get to know that side of him he’s really cool to be around. So just being able to kind of see that in him, show that side and to be able to be close not just in football, but off the the field too. It’s been really cool for me too.”

The 2021 Heisman Trophy winner minimized the impact the game’s most prestigious award has on his future, calling himself an incomplete product.

“Winning the Heisman is obviously a huge honor but I also understand that it doesn’t entitle me to anything,” Young said. “It’s an award that celebrates one season that I had in the past, which is again an honor, but it doesn’t mean anything towards me moving forward, you know, it doesn’t entitle me to anything.

“Because of that, I don’t feel like I am where I need to be. I don’t feel like I’m a finished product by any means. There’s a lot of stuff that I want to keep getting better at. There’s definitely stuff for me to work on whether it’s individual stuff or stuff as a team to get better, so I’m working day in and day out to improve myself.”

Bryce Young finished the 2021 season with second-most touchdowns, second-most total passing yards and the seventh-most passing yards per game. His completion percentage, at 66.9%, ranked 20th in the country and is perhaps his biggest area for improvement heading into 2022 and year of draft eligibility.
