If Alabama were to make the College Football Playoff, they would make history. Following the penultimate top 25, the lowest a team has been ranked and eventually placed in the top four is No. 6. Georgia (2017) and Oklahoma (2019) did so after winning their respective conference championship games.

On Tuesday, the selection committee kept Alabama put, still at No. 8. Despite remaining a lone-loss team and having some resume-boosting wins along the way, there has been no movement for the Crimson Tide.

Now, one final opportunity presents itself to impress the CFP committee and it’s a big one. Alabama will face off against No. 1 Georgia in the SEC Championship, hoping to claim the best win in college football this Saturday. Getting some help in other conference championship games would certainly help.

In the committee’s eyes, is there a road for Alabama?

“Good question, fair question, but it’s kind of asking us to project on where we are,” CFP Selection Committee Chair Boo Corrigan said on Tuesday night. “Our goal is to watch games this weekend, and it’ll be great to be able to watch them as a group as we go through it and as we’ve talked about before.

“Conference championships and head-to-heads and everything that we look at per the protocol will be in full effect of what we’re doing and making sure that we make the right decisions.”

Corrigan mentioning head-to-head could come into effect when discussing Texas. Sept. 9 in Tuscaloosa seemingly looms large, with the Longhorns coming into Bryant-Denny Stadium and walking out with a historic win. To this point, Texas has stayed ranked ahead of Alabama, no matter how pretty/ugly the wins have looked.

If the final spot were to somehow come down to Alabama and Texas, head-to-head has once again been brought up as an important factor for the committee by Corrigan.

In the history of the College Football Playoff, the SEC champion has never not been included. Alabama has even won a national championship after failing to win the SEC West. Georgia earned their first national championship after losing to Alabama in the 2021 SEC Championship.

Basically, the conference has dominated this format since its implementation back in 2014.

Alabama taking down Georgia, finishing with a 12-1 record, winning the SEC, and being left out of the playoff would be unprecedented. Best case scenario for Nick Saban‘s team — take care of business in Atlanta and then pray for chaos.
