Alabama still had a slight chance to make the College Football Playoff but needed a favorable ranking from the CFP committee. On Tuesday night, the Crimson Tide came in at No. 6, a spot behind Ohio State. Now, the chances of another final four including Nick Saban is as close to zero as possible days before the final unveiling.

Ultimately, the downfall of Alabama was the resume they put together. Only two wins featured in the latest set of rankings, with Texas being No. 20 and Mississippi State No. 24. Add in two losses to LSU and Tennessee, and ESPN’s David Pollack agreed with the committee’s decision to virtually eliminate the Crimson Tide.

“Everybody points to the close losses, I get it,” Pollack said during Tuesday’s reveal show. “They also had a bunch of close games with Ole Miss and Texas A&M and Texas. They haven’t been a great team this year. You’ve seen Bryce Young be great in spurts but this isn’t a team you look at that’s been dominant by any stretch. At any form of the season really.”

The wins against Ole Miss, Texas, and Texas A&M that Pollack mentioned all did come down to the final seconds of the game. Alabama can thank their defense for the Aggies and Rebels, while Will Reichard hit a game-winning kick in Austin early in the season.

Ohio State was the big point of contention throughout the entire week, coming off a blowout loss to arch-rival Michigan at home. Better wins are on the side of the Buckeyes, as does only having one total loss.

The Buckeyes got the No. 5 elusive spot because of those factors. Ryan Day is just a USC loss away in the Pac-12 Championship from possibly making the CFP.

Now, with the regular season over, Alabama does not have another opportunity to improve its resume and impress the College Football Playoff. LSU will be the one representing the West in the SEC Championship, facing off against Georgia.

Most would be happy with the season Alabama just pulled off, going 10-2 in the SEC including a thrilling nonconference showdown against Texas. Quarterback Bryce Young was his normal self throughout the entire season as well, especially when fully healthy.

A Sugar Bowl appearance is most likely still on the way against a highly-ranked Big 12 opponent.

But Pollack still acknowledges the Crimson Tide was not as dominant as we have seen over the years under Saban. Having two losses and not dominating teams from start to finish as we’re used to seeing will be why Alabama does not appear in the College Football Playoff.
