PFF recently ranked the top 10 defensive coordinators in the country. To no surprise, all but one came from Power Five conferences, with three SEC guys being included. Not included on the list was Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Steele. That led to a big-time troll from Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin on Twitter.

This offseason, former Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding left the Crimson Tide for the same position on Kiffin’s staff at Ole Miss. Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide replaced Golding with Steele.

Kiffin is known for his hilarious tweets, and this is another big-time troll on Alabama.

Kiffin and Steele have overlapped with one another, spending just one year together on the same staff. During the 2014 season, the duo was in Tuscaloosa under Saban. Steele was coaching linebackers, while Kiffin was in his first season as the offensive coordinator. Alabama wound up in the College Football Playoff but lost in the semifinals to Ohio State.

The two will face each other in what is always a fun game between Alabama and Ole Miss. Kiffin always makes the game personal, looking to get a win over someone he respects so much in Saban. However, he may be thinking the job will now be easier with Golding on his sideline and Steele across the way.

Kiffin will look to best Alabama on Sept. 23 and finally get a win his win over the Crimson Tide. As he once famously said, everyone in the SEC will have their popcorn ready.

More on Kevin Steele, recent resume

For the fourth consecutive season, Steele will be at a new school. The run began at Auburn in 2020, serving as the defensive coordinator at the end of the Guz Malzhan days. Flash forward a year and Tennessee needed someone to shortly run the program before Josh Heupel. Steele spent 10 days as the interim head coach in Knoxville.

Miami was the stop for the 2022 season, being hired on Mario Cristobal‘s initial staff. The fit was not right and after one year in Coral Gables, Steele is looking for something more stable at Alabama.

Steele will be looking to give the Crimson Tide a different identity as the defensive coordinator, changing things up from Golding. In order to get back to national championship-winning ways, those in Tuscaloosa believe Steele’s influence will make a big difference in 2023 and moving forward.
