Alabama defensive back DeMarcco Hellams goes up against the Crimson Tide wide receiving corps every day at practice and is expected to stand his ground against the best of the best. So, who better to break down the room and describe their best attributes?

“The receiver corps, they’re deep, they’re deep as well. We like to say iron sharpens iron around here,” Hellams said. “They get us better every day in practice. We try our best to get them better every day of practice. We have a lot of good receivers, and I think there’ll be some [breakout] names this year.”

Hellams singled out former Georgia wideout Jermaine Burton, who transferred into the program this offseason as the player he looks most forward to battling one-on-one every day in practice.

“Speed. Demanding. He’s fast. He can get vertical fast. He’s a good route runner,” Hellams said of Burtons attributes. “Every day in practice, we call it good-on-good periods. You know, you’re going to get the best matchup.”

Last season at Georgia, Jermaine Burton hauled in 26 passes for 497 yards and five touchdowns, pacing the team with 19.1 yards per catch and having the most touchdowns among wide receivers. That included two catches for 28 yards in the National Championship Game win over his new team.

In 10 games the year prior, he caught 27 passes for 404 yards and three touchdowns. All in all, Georgia and Alabama played three times during his career in Athens, so he was plenty familiar with the Crimson Tide.

Burton recently addressed the media about the transfer, stating that he’s ready to win another national championship, but this time in a starring role for the Crimson Tide.

“What motivates me is the way these guys treated me when I came into the program,” Burton said about transferring to a rival SEC school. “I couldn’t thank these guys enough. Regardless of the outcome of last year’s game and me being on the other side of the ball, I’m here now and I think that’s what I really need to focus on, and focusing on this team and what we can do this year.”
