Following Alabama’s loss to Tennessee, the defense needed to find a way to bounce back with the team’s game against Mississippi State. That’s exactly what happened too, with Mississippi State only scoring six points. Now, Alabama defensive back DeMarcco Hellams explained how the team put the loss behind them.

DeMarcco Hellams was specifically asked what the difference was from week to week that allowed the secondary to play so much better.

“Just taking what the coaches give us,” DeMarcco Hellams said. “Preparing and practicing much better.”

“You know, just coming out and putting last week behind us and having a great week of practice preparing for Mississippi State.”

DeMarcco Hellams was then specifically asked what it was like putting the Tennessee loss behind him personally.

“You know, it’s something I always do. You know, last week is in the past. I just try and focus on Mississippi State this week and preparing for the bye week to get ready for a good LSU team.”

The Mississippi State and Tennessee offenses share similarities

One interesting thing about the difference between the Tennessee and Alabama games is that there are similarities between the two offenses. Josh Heupel actually played for Mike Leach at Oklahoma and Heupel has brought a lot of the same concepts to what Tennessee is doing today.

“He’s definitely got some things that look familiar,” Mike Leach said. “I can think of a play in particular that we ran back in the day. He’s got his quarterback running that play better than he ran it. So, yeah.”
