Detailing why Ty Simpson will win Alabama's starting quarterback job
Alabama is still working through one of the bigger quarterback battles in the country at the moment. Even so, On3’s J.D. PicKell has made his pick as he has Ty Simpson becoming the Crimson Tide’s QB1.
PicKell named Simpson as ‘Bama’s starter during Thursday’s episode of ‘The Hard Count’. A big reason why at the moment is because Simpson, for now at least, is all potential as he hasn’t truly played college football yet.
“My prediction for who’s going to be the starting quarterback for Alabama, ultimately, is Ty Simpson,” PicKell stated. “Some part of this for Ty Simpson, to be 100% fair, is the unknown with him is undefeated. We have the smallest sample size on Ty Simpson. There’s no way around that.”
However, PicKell also knows that Simpson has the talent to win the gig too. Based on what he saw from him over the spring, Simpson has the tools to succeed in Alabama’s new offense considering he showed a willingness to accept the game as it came to him.
“When it comes to ability for Ty Simpson? There is no question mark for me about if he has that or not. It is there,” said PicKell. “He was a five-star quarterback out of high school, he was a top-three quarterback for us here at On3 in that cycle. The dude can play some football.”

“The biggest thing with me with Ty Simpson is when I watched him during the spring football game? It wasn’t glamorous. Yeah, there were some mistakes, there were some things you don’t love, some things you’ve got to clean up without a doubt. But this dude had zero issue taking what the defense gave him,” PicKell said. “I think if you can take what the defense gives you in this Tommy Rees offense? You’re going to be set up for success.”
Jalen Milroe and Tyler Buchner are more experienced and might be more skilled in some ways. Even so, with how ‘Bama is going to play, Simpson might fit the best. He might not yet be what the Tide have had at the position over the past few seasons but, considering what they need now, PicKell sees him as the answer to their quarterback question, at least by the time they kickoff against the Longhorns on September 9th.
“I think the ability is there, I think he’s going to do what is asked of him as the quarterback at Alabama. Does he win the Heisman Trophy? Like, I don’t know. I don’t think it’s going to be built for him to really have the offense go through him,” said PicKell. “But I think he will do what is required of him, I think he will be consistent. I think he will make the right decision based on what I saw in that spring football game.”
“Ultimately, I think, by Texas, he will be your starting quarterback,” PicKell said. “For me, Ty Simpson is going to be your starting quarterback at Alabama.”
