Few defensive back prospects in the country have drawn the country’s attention more than Hoschton (Ga.) Mill Creek safety Caleb Downs. The rising senior has fielded offers from across the country, with nearly every major program looking to add him to their 2023 class.

One of those is defending SEC champion Alabama, which has been in pursuit of Downs for better than a year. And unsurprisingly, the Crimson Tide will get one of his five official visits, which he announced Monday afternoon.

Downs has been on campus in Tuscaloosa twice in the past year, and this marks the second official visit he has already locked in. He’ll visit Georgia two weeks before on June 3.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder is the No. 11 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranks as the country’s No. 1 safety and the top junior prospect in the state of Georgia.

As it stands right now, Alabama and Georgia are in a two-team race to land Downs, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM). The in-state Bulldogs hold a 59.2 percent chance of securing his commitment, while the Crimson Tide trail slightly behind at 28.8 percent. Ohio State is running a distant third at 4.4 percent.

Caleb Downs Scouting Summary

“Extremely well-rounded safety who has been one of the top prospects in Georgia regardless of class for much of his high school career. Shows a complete skill set as a cover safety. Has the range to cover hash to boundary with ease. Also is fluid and natural in man coverage. Outstanding ball production with 14 interceptions over the first three seasons of his high school career. Instinctual both in coverage and as a cover down defender. Identifies run plays and underneath passes very quickly. Also an active tackler. Shows of his athleticism on offense where he sees snaps at multiple skill positions, including quarterback. Has starred while playing against top competition in the Peach State. Comes from strong bloodlines with a father who was an NFL Draft pick and brother who is one of the better receivers in college football.” — Charles Power, On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings
