Urban Meyer defends Nick Saban, Alabama with bold statement
Alabama has lost two of their last three matchups, their first time losing two regular season games since 2019. They now sit with their lowest chances of making the National Championship game in quite some time, but former Ohio State and Florida Gators coach Urban Meyer made a rather bold statement in defense of Nick Saban and the Tide on the most recent episode of Urban’s Take with Tim May.
“Great coach obviously, uncharted waters a little bit for the past decade probably, but I want to throw this out for everybody to think about too. They lost to Tennessee and lost at LSU at night, I’m saying there’s no other team in the country who would’ve won those games,” Meyer said.
Meyer’s take was hot, which he too understood, but he made it even more direct using the current top four teams of the College Football Playoff rankings to further support his stance.

“I know that’s a bold statement, but you look at the Wolverines, you look at Ohio State, look at Georgia, look at TCU, I guess those are the top four right now. I’m saying all four teams lost at least one of those games,” Meyer said.
Meyer’s statement may seem like a shot at the current top-four teams in the country, but it is more of a defense of the Crimson Tide, who have had to play in two of the most hostile road environments in a three-week stretch.
“So before everybody hits the panic button in Tuscaloosa, they went to Tennessee at night and it was a very close game and they lost,” Meyer said. “They went down and went overtime at LSU, I’ve been in those stadiums, other than Penn State those are the most difficult stadiums in the country to play.”

Alabama’s combination of a tough road stretch where they suffered very narrow losses compounded with their lofty expectations year in and year out definitely has put them in unfamiliar territory at the moment.
“So he as an issue and the issue is you’re gonna start hearing about opt outs and when you’re only acceptable course is National Championship and that’s taken from you, which I don’t necessarily think it should be,” Meyer said.
The two-loss Tide are now ranked No. 9 in the country, but it seems like Meyer believes they should still be in the College Football Playoff conversation and possibly could, as he doubled down on his previous stance.
“I see TCU No. 4 in the country and I see other teams and we’re gonna see how this thing shakes out. But I’m gonna say again, I don’t believe any team in America would’ve won both of those games, and I know that’s a bold statement,” Meyer said. “Matter of fact I’ll say this, I know none of those teams would’ve won both games, so it is what it is.”
