Greg Byrne reveals new information he learned after police testimony regarding Brandon Miller, Darius Miles
Since Tuesday’s testimony from Tuscaloosa police that said Alabama star Brandon Miller received a text from Darius Miles the night of last month’s shooting, information has been rolling in. Crimson Tide athletic director Greg Byrne is also learning more about the situation.
Byrne joined Rece Davis and Pete Thamel on the ESPN College GameDay podcast to talk about what else he’s learning about the incident. Police testified Miles texted Miller to bring the gun to the scene of the shooting, which killed Jamea Jonae Harris. Byrne said he didn’t know about those texts until the testimony.
However, Byrne also learned more about how many texts Miller received. The star freshman expected to be Miles’ ride that evening.
“The new information that we learned yesterday was there had been some text messages exchanged with Brandon and Darius. That information was news to me,” Byrne said. “I had not been told that before. That was that information. And then, we were able to receive some information since then about the texts exchanged that has not been out there publicly.
“For instance, Darius had been asking Brandon to come pick him up for close to an hour. He was his ride that evening. Brandon was already on his way to pick up Darius when he received a text message from him that was reported in the media yesterday. I didn’t know that yesterday. I found that out today.”
Byrne also reiterated Miles was texting Miller to pick him up and he got the text as he was on his way. Miller’s attorney released a statement Wednesday saying he didn’t know there was a gun in the car, and Byrne said he learned that over the last 24 hours, as well.
“He had received text messages from Darius over the course of an hour to ask him to come pick him up,” Byrne said. “The text message that was released yesterday was sent when Brandon was on his way to pick him up and was already almost there.”

When Thamel asked for clarification as to whether or not Miller was planning to deliver the gun, Byrne said he was simply going to get him.
“He was going to pick him up,” Byrne said. “Darius had been asking Brandon for over an hour to come pick him up.”
Earlier in the interview, Byrne confirmed the plan is for Miller to play in Wednesday’s game between Alabama and South Carolina. He added the star freshman made the trip to Columbia for the matchup.
“[Miller] is in South Carolina with our team,” Byrne said. “He went through walk-through today and we expect him to play this evening.”
