Greg McElroy breaks down biggest questions surrounding Alabama

Alabama has come a long way over the course of this season, specifically over their last four games in the past month. Even so, Greg McElroy believes there’s still an issue or two that could end up drowning the Crimson Tide.

McElroy looked at the biggest questions at the midseason point for several teams during an episode of ‘Always College Football’ this week. When it came to ‘Bama, he noted the offense as the top problem in Tuscaloosa as he thinks it’s still too inefficient, hit or miss, and low-scoring at times for them to get to the next tier.

“The offense, still, is a little bit herky-jerky. It’s very big-play reliant. It has been hard to kind of wrap your head around the inefficiencies of the offense,” said McElroy. “They’ve given up a ton of sacks – currently they’re 103th in sacks given up. A handful of those will go to the offensive line. But a handful also needs to rest on the quarterback’s shoulders as well. Jalen Milroe has held the ball a little too long. As a result, they’ve gotten behind the sticks more than you would like.”

“They’re currently 58th in college football with just 30 points per game scored,” McElroy noted.

Alabama’s offense was quite a mess after three games, specifically because of the looming quarterback question. That reared its head against Texas and, to a lesser degree, against South Florida the next week.

However, since then, the Tide have put up at least 24 points in each of their last four for an average of 28.5 per game. That coincides with a step up in play from Milroe as he has returned from his benching with a fury. In their latest 4-0 stretch, he has averaged just under 250 total yards a game for nine touchdowns overall.

With all that said, McElroy still has faith in what Alabama could accomplish. If they handle their business to end the regular season, he doesn’t see what the Tide couldn’t be right in the thick of things in the postseason.

“I think there’s some question marks around Alabama. But, I’ve said this for weeks, I still think Alabama is a team that could very easily run the table and find their way to the SEC Championship. In a one-game season against Georgia? Who knows. Maybe they throw their best punch and knock them out like they did a couple of years ago.
