Greg McElroy tells hilarious story from 2008 Alabama-Tennessee game
The Third Saturday In October brings back great memories for former Alabama quarterback and current ESPN College Football analyst Greg McElroy. He was a QB for the Crimson Tide in the late 2000’s and remembers a particular matchup where some fans aided him in his postgame celebration.
On Twitter, McElroy remembered the 2008 game and the celebration which ensued following the Alabama victory. Here was the tweet:
“Funny story about 2008 Bama/Tenn Game…
We had cigars in the locker room, but we forgot to buy lighters. We asked fans for lighters and they tossed them down and I stuffed them in my pants.
Then, Coach put me in the game!
I played last 2-3 plays with 5 lighters in my pants.”
Wow. Bold move by Greg McElroy to stuff lighters in his pants and then go play. He later told the full story in a video that he tweeted. Here that was:

“Okay, I’m not going to lie. I had completely forgotten about this moment in my college career. It’s been 15 years. I don’t think Coach Saban is going to be upset over me not focusing on the play. We’re playing there in Knoxville in 2008. We had 100+ cigars sitting in the locker room. Very excited about the postgame festivities.
“And then it hit us — dude, we don’t have lighters. How are we going to smoke out cigars without lighters? So we start asking people in the stands. Say hey, do you guys have any lighters? Can you toss down your lighters? So they tossed down five or six plastic lighters. So I stuffed them in my pants. We’re all set. We’re covered.
“Next thing you know, Coach is like ‘McElroy, you’re up. Let’s go.’ Go play?!? What? I’ve got cigars in the locker room, lighters in my pants, and you want me to go in the game? Well, I did. Didn’t want Coach to know that we were already planning the celebration. So I went in there and I can probably say I’m the only college football player to play with lighters in his pants.”
