Jahmyr Gibbs to make number change, will wear No. 1 once again
Jahmyr Gibbs is about to make a major change at Alabama this football season.
The former Georgia Tech running back is switching his jersey number back to No. 1 — the same number he wore in two seasons with the Yellow Jackets. He posted a picture on his Instagram story seemingly confirming the move.
During spring ball, Gibbs wore No. 13 for the Crimson Tide. Now, he’ll be back in his old number with his new program. It’s also the same number Jameson Williams wore last year for Alabama as he helped the Crimson Tide to the national championship.
In two years at Georgia Tech, Gibbs rushed for 1,206 yards and eight touchdowns while also proving to be an effective weapon in the passing game. He caught 59 passes for 768 yards and five touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets before entering the transfer portal this offseason.
Jahmyr Gibbs is one of many big-time additions for Alabama this offseason
After hitting the portal, Gibbs became the No. 3 transfer on the open market, according to the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings. He only trailed former Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams and former Pittsburgh wide receiver Jordan Addison — both of whom ended up going to USC to play for Lincoln Riley.

Gibbs is part of a talented recruiting class for Saban and Co. this offseason. Not only did Alabama bring in the No. 2 recruiting class in the nation, according to the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking, but he also landed three top-10 transfers. Wide receiver Jermaine Burton arrives in Tuscaloosa after two years with Georgia and cornerback Eli Ricks comes over after starting his career at LSU. They were the No. 6 and No. 8 transfers, respectively, in the portal this year, according to the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings.
In addition to the transfers, Alabama received commitments from eight top-50 prospects, including three top-25 recruits. Five-star EDGEs Jeremiah Alexander and Jihaad Campbell were the No. 14 and No. 17 players in the nation, respectively, while five-star quarterback Ty Simpson was the nation’s No. 25 player, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
