Jalen Milroe gives his impressions of Kalen DeBoer offense watching Michael Penix Jr.

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe is one of the most explosive athletes at the position in college football. Now, after watching some Michael Penix tape, he’s excited to see what Kalen DeBoer has in store for him in the new-look Crimson Tide offense.

DeBoer worked magic with Penix and the Washington offense over the last two seasons. It was that success that helped make him the next Alabama head coach. So of course, with the marriage of he and Milroe comes expectations of another high-octane and exciting offensive attack, and the Alabama QB couldn’t be more excited for what’s in store.

When speaking with Adam Breneman on a recent episode of his Next Up show, Milroe sat down and discussed what he’s gleaned from crunching tape of DeBoer’s recent offenses prior to taking the Alabama job.

“You know, one thing that stuck out was how explosive they were on offense and how everyone on their offense contributed to their success last year,” Milroe commented of the 2023 Huskies. “And you know, they do a really good job on offense.”

Milroe loves that the electric offense he watched during his Washington film review is now coming to Tuscaloosa.

“So, I’m super excited because that’s the system that, from Washington to here, in the transition, from their offense to Alabama, is going to be awesome.”

But he also noticed that it all started with their leader under center, saying of Penix:

“He did a really good job being a leader for their team. He did a really good job there, especially watching the tape on the years prior with him being the quarterback there.”

Milroe knows he’s got some pretty hefty shoes to fill as the next QB in line for Kalen DeBoer.

“(Penix) is a really good quarterback and it’s evident to him being selected the way he was selected in this past year’s draft. So you know, he’s a really good quarterback.”

Milroe himself is a potential first-round NFL Draft prospect as well given his sheer athleticism and ability to sling the deep ball. He certainly looked much improved in 2023 compared to 2022. Under DeBoer, who knows how much improvement can happen, perhaps the ceiling is non-existent.

He’s ready to show off as a passer, though. Following his comments on Penix, Breneman asked Milroe if he is ready to throw the rock and throw it a lot, just like Penix did in DeBoer’s system.

“No doubt,” answered Milroe.
