It was demoralizing for Jameson Williams to watch his teammate and fellow wide receiver John Metchie go down with an injury. However, Williams also knew it was time for him to step up, to take on a bigger role.
Against Georgia, Williams shined for his teammate — hauling in touchdown after touchdown. Now, he’ll be looking to do the same thing in the College Football Playoff.
Earlier this week, Williams revealed his thoughts regarding potential adjustments opposing defenses may make.
“I wouldn’t know what to expect going up. Pretty much coming up we’re going to watch a little film, see what these teams do. See what Cincinnati does and how they play things,” stated Williams. “But I’ve seen a small adjustment — pretty much just over the top coverage after my guy Metchie went down. That was pretty much it. But other than that, none really.”
While Williams didn’t see too many changes in the way Georgia played against him, the loss of Metchie weighed heavy on his mind.
“It was harsh for me. You know John — he’s my brother. I mesh with him real good,” stated Williams. “When I came in, he was one of the first guys to get me under his wing. We just started kicking it. That’s my brother, man. It was pretty hard seeing that happen.”
Williams: ‘I feel like we all have to step up and do a better job.’
With a teammate and friend he’s so close with going down, Jameson Williams knows challenges lay ahead. However, he’s confident in the rest of the Alabama receiving corps to rise to the occasion.

“I feel like we all have to step up and do a better job,” stated Williams. “With Metchie going down, we have receivers that have to play a big part in the offense. I feel like all of us have to step up in some type of way. No matter who it is, I feel like we all have the big play mentality.
“So things shouldn’t be very hard, because I feel like we have a lot of talent in the room. We just have to make plays.”
Furthermore, the man throwing the football doesn’t lack confident in Williams. After Alabama’s victory in the SEC Championship Game, quarterback Bryce Young sung the praises of the speedster wide receiver.
“Jamo stepping up and playing like he did in a big moment. Honestly, it’s not something I would say is surprising for me,” stated Young. “Seeing how he works, he’s stepped up in big moments countless times. For him to step up, that’s Jamo. Obviously he’s huge for us.”
Bryce Young and Jameson Williams have shown innate chemistry thus far in 2021. While the loss of John Metchie may tug on their heart strings, winning the College Football Playoff for their teammate would be a glorious way to honor him.
