JD PicKell offers up fast food analogy to describe Alabama offensive attack this year
With the changing of the guard with the Alabama football team, many college football fans are curious what the Crimson Tide’s offensive attack will look like under their new head coach, Kalen DeBoer. On Wednesday evening on The Paul Finebaum Show during the 2024 SEC KICKOFF, On3’s J.D. PicKell offered up his analogy on what he thinks the Tide’s new offense will feel like for Bama fans.
“I think the offense is going to be phenomenal. My first thought when he [Kalen DeBoer] got hired at Alabama was okay, well Jalen Milroe, different skill set than a Michael Penix, Jr. than he had at Washington. Or a Jake Haener that he had at Fresno State,” PicKell began.
“But the more I thought about it, they’re gonna cater to his strengths as a runner. With spreading it out. And they’re going to, I think, equip him to be more consistent as a passer. And so, the more I thought about it, it went from this oil and water perspective on it, to like, almost fries and milkshake. You dip a fry in a milkshake, and you tell somebody about it, and they’re like, ‘That sounds disgusting.’ But then once you do it, you’re like, ‘Oh, actually, how have I ever lived my life without this?’ I think that’s Jalen Milroe and the Alabama offense,” PicKell continued.
“Once you have it. The sweet and the savory. There’s two things that don’t seem like they should go together because Jalen Milroe is not… like a I guess, from a reputational standpoint, a dynamic downfield thrower, or a consistent passer as much. But I think this offense is gonna play to his skill set. I’m excited to see it,” PicKell explained.

While he might not be perfect, Milroe is still expected to contend for the Heisman Trophy this season as one of the best players in all of college football. Last season (2023), he completed 65.8% of his passes for 2,834 yards, while tossing in 23 touchdowns and six interceptions. As a runner, he had 531 yards on the ground and 12 touchdowns. On3’s Jesse Simonton listed Milroe as his No. 3 ranked Heisman Trophy Candidate heading into the 2024 campaign.
