Joel Klatt breaks down Bryce Young's Heisman Trophy resume
After shuffling through Heisman Trophy favorites like a deck of cards all season, it seems college football pundits have finally landed on one for good: Bryce Young. The Alabama quarterback has put up stats all year, but it’s his clutch performances the past two weeks that have cemented him as the frontrunner.
In a TV appearance Wednesday evening, FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt explained why Bryce Young’s case to win the award is obvious.
“Odds-on favorite to win the award is Bryce Young,” Joel Klatt began. “I think we all agree with that after what he did against Georgia in that SEC Championship game. He had a remarkable season. I love watching him play. There’s an ease with which he plays the game. He throws the ball with accuracy and power at every level of the field. (His stats) are staggering.
“Remember, this is an offense that had to rebuild itself for the most part. They lost their offensive coordinator. They lost some linemen. They lost all those great wide receivers including last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, DeVonta Smith. He steps in for his first year and was remarkable. His 314 completions this season are a single-season program record. When you’re doing something at Bama in this era, you are doing something special. If he were to win, which we are expecting that he does, he would be the first Bama QB to win the Heisman Trophy in the school’s history.”
Not many gave Young and the Crimson Tide a chance this past week against No. 1 Georgia. In fact, it was the first time in 92 games that Alabama football entered a contest as an underdog. But once the game began, the outcome was never in doubt. The quarterback sliced up what many believed to be the best defense ever, throwing for 421 yards and three touchdowns.

Alabama won by a score of 41-24 to clinch its spot in the Playoff.
“Last week, (Bryce Young) was remarkable,” Joel Klatt said. “There was one drive early in the second quarter where he throws a fade to Metchie. Beautiful throw. Later in the drive, he’s directing traffic, steps up in the pocket and pitches it out to his running back on a little bit of a scramble and they get a first down. On the touchdown pass, he’s sitting, sitting waiting and he’s patient in the pocket. He doesn’t run out of the pocket because there’s no pressure. Then he throws an absolute laser beam. Touchdown Bama and they never look back.”
Young has thrown 43 passing touchdowns this season, a number that ranks second in FBS. His 4,322 yards through the air are fourth in the nation and second in the SEC. Should he claim the Heisman Trophy, Young would be the first Alabama quarterback to do so.
Prior to leading the Crimson Tide to a dominant conference championship win, the quarterback directed an impressive comeback against Auburn in the Iron Bowl. With his team trailing 10-3 late in the fourth, Young led them on a 97-yard touchdown drive to send the game to overtime. In the extra periods, he threw another touchdown and converted a pair of two-point conversions to earn a 24-22 win.
Although Bryce Young is the favorite according to Joel Klatt and many others, there are three other candidates competing for the Heisman Trophy. Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud and Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett are hopeful the odds on Young are wrong.
The Heisman Trophy winner will be announced on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET Saturday.
