Jordan Battle explains how Alabama secondary flustered Stetson Bennett
Alabama shutdown Georgia in the SEC Championship Game in ways no team has thus far in 2021. Crimson Tide safety Jordan Battle helped keep Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett flustered, even getting an electrifying pick-six courtesy of the Bulldogs signal caller.
Moving the football was like pulling teeth for Bennett and the Bulldogs. All in all, the Georgia quarterback passed for 340 yards against Alabama — tossing three touchdowns and two interceptions in the process. However, Georgia was dominated in the second half, outscored and shutdown by the Crimson Tide.
After the gigantic victory, Battle explained how the Alabama secondary lived in the head of Bennett.
“I think the main thing in this game was our disguises,” stated Battle. “We put in a lot of disguises this week. That was the big thing. Just have his eyes wandering around before the play.
“I think we did a good job on the back end and linebackers stemming and disguising. So I think that was a big part of the game.”
After playing his way into the starting quarterback role for Georgia, Battle’s Crimson Tide defense ruined Bennett’s momentum. Now, there’s talk of a benching prior to Georgia entering the College Football Playoff.

If Georgia and Alabama win their semifinal games, Battle and Bennett could go at it again in the national championship. However, it’s possible Kirby Smart turns to J.T. Daniels to quarterback his squad after Bennett’s performance in the SEC Championship.
Smart: ‘I certainly have a lot of confidence in Stetson [Bennett].’
While Georgia faithful was ready for a change after Jordan Battle picked off Stetson Bennett, Kirby Smart wasn’t. Following the loss in the SEC Championship, Smart reiterated his support for Bennett as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback.
“We have a decision to make every week at every position, but I have the utmost confidence in Stetson Bennett,” stated Smart. “I think he did some really nice things tonight. We go and reevaluate everything all the time, but he played well. It’s a tough environment we put him in defensively and didn’t — we have to be able to run the ball and have a little bit of semblance of balance, and I felt like there was times tonight where we were getting into a scoring contest because our defense didn’t get stops. And you don’t want to have to do that.
“But I certainly have a lot of confidence in Stetson, and I have a lot of confidence in J.T. too.”
Kirby Smart continues to back Stetson Bennett. When the chips are pushed into the middle of the table during the College Football Playoff, we’ll see if the Bulldogs live and die by the quarterback.
