Former Alabama star Justin Thomas has always had an undeniable amount of talent ever since he set foot on the PGA Tour in 2013. He’s racked up 14 wins thus far in his young career, including a PGA Championship win at Quail Hollow in 2017. However, following that major victory, Thomas has admittedly underperformed in the majors for someone of his mind-blowing skill.
He got off to a rough start after carding a four-over in the first round of The Masters this year. Then after the round, he said he went home and got his feelings out. That strategy apparently worked, as he rattled off six birdies on Friday en route to a five-under 67 in the second round. Thomas only had one bogey on the afternoon and he currently sits at one-under par heading into the weekend.
He went flag hunting on hole No. 16 and nearly had the second hole in one on the day. Check out the incredible shot below.
That shot set Thomas up for his third straight birdie and put him into red numbers at one under par. He currently sits in a tie for 10th place. The field is chasing Scottie Scheffler at this point, and Thomas is currently seven strokes back of the current No. 1 player in the world. There’s still 36 holes of golf left to be played, but Scheffler has been blistering hot on the golf course the past few months. He doesn’t look like he’ll relinquish the lead, but 36 holes can seem like an eternity at a golf course as difficult as Augusta National.

Thomas’ ball-striking is among the best on the planet when he’s playing well, so it’ll be interesting to see if he can make a move during the weekend. The talent and skill are certainly there, there is no question about that. Thomas’ course history at Augusta National is not nearly as good as you would think it would be. In his past six attempts at The Masters, Thomas only has one top five finish–a fourth place in 2020. The course is an excellent fit for his skill set and he has gushed about how much he loves it there in years past.
Thomas likely learned many secrets about Augusta National from talking with Tiger Woods
Thomas talked about in years past about how he maybe put the tournament on too high of a pedestal. He has also likely gleaned plenty of inside information about Augusta National from one of the greatest to ever do it, Tiger Woods. The former Alabama star has gotten quite close with Woods the past few years. Jon Rahm made it clear this week in his press conference that Tiger would only share secrets about the course with Thomas. While the former Arizona State star was joking a little bit, it’s clear that Woods will only share information about Augusta National with certain players.
The Masters is always truly one of the best events in all of sports, so it’s going to be an exciting weekend to see who comes away with the coveted green jacket.
