Kalen DeBoer details what Justin Jefferson brings for Alabama amid Deontae Lawson injury
The Alabama Crimson Tide are largely turning to Justin Jefferson to fill in at linebacker for the injured Deontae Lawson. It’s a difficult role but one head coach Kalen DeBoer feels he’s going to handle well.
DeBoer first pointed to the style that Jefferson plays with from his linebacker position being unique compared to Lawson being unique. He also, however, made sure to take the time to praise him for the work he’s been putting in.
“Maybe a little different style,” Kalen DeBoer said. “Obviously, stature. You look at that right away, but Justin can run. Justin’s physical. He’s a guy you can count on. He’s really trustworthy. He pours everything into it. He has a team-first mindset.”
Justin Jefferson spent time at the JUCO ranks before going to Alabama ahead of the 2023 season. This year, he has played in 10 games and has made 45 total tackles with 2.0 sacks. He’s also defended a pass this season. With the injury, he’ll now be asked to step into a larger role within the Crimson Tide’s defense.
“Going through spring ball and him trying to figure out his role, I remember talking at the time just — he’s been ready whenever called upon. He’s worked through his things here and there with injuries,” DeBoer said. “But any guy is looking forward to that moment, and I know that along with the disappointment that we always have and how much we love Deontae, we’re also excited about the next man up and the opportunity that creates for him. We’re all fans of him and want him to go out there and be great and we’re confident in him.”

Lawson left Alabama’s game against Oklahoma with a leg injury that was significant enough to force him to miss the remainder of the season. That’s going to be a massive loss for Alabama and DeBoer to find a way to overcome, in particular as he’s a team captain, is second on the team in tackles with 76, and has worn the green dot as the defensive signal caller this season.
“Any time you lose a great player like Deontae, it’s gonna affect you,” DeBoer said. “His leadership, he is the guy that makes a lot of the calls on the football field. Just seems like he’s always in control. We have trust and belief in the guys that come in with [Justin Jefferson]. Those guys take a lot of reps, and he’s played a lot this year, too.
Alabama finishes the season against Auburn, as always. A win in that game would help keep the Crimson Tide alive for an outside shot at the College Football Playoff.
