Alabama head coach Nate Oats revealed graduate guard Latrell Wrightsell will have surgery Wednesday to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon and will be out for the year, according to BamaOnline’s Charlie Potter.

“He did rupture his Achilles tendon, so he’ll be out for the year, which is disappointing,” Oats said, according to Potter.

Wrightsell suffered the injury in the second half of Saturday’s game against Oregon, leaving the court and not returning in the 83-81 loss in the Players Era Festival championship game.

“He’s got a lower-leg injury,” Oats said postgame Saturday, per Potter. “They’re concerned about his Achilles, which obviously wouldn’t be good. They’re gonna get him evaluated once we get back. So we’ll get an MRI and see what we’ve got going. We’re keeping our fingers crossed there.”

Before the injury, Wrightsell had 10 points in 15 minutes, including shooting 2-of-4 from the 3-point line, and entered the Players Era Festival averaging 11.7 points per game and shooting 49-percent from the field this season.

Wrightsell is a significant loss for Alabama

A former transfer from Cal State Fullerton, Wrightsell played in 31 games last season with the Tide, but battled injuries throughout, including missing time in the NCAA Tournament due to head injuries.

Wrightsell is in his fifth and final season of eligiblity, and without a NCAA injury waiver, this setback could mean the end of his collegiate career.

No. 10 Alabama (6-2) will travel to Chapel Hill to play No. 20 North Carolina on Wednesday, with tip set for 7:15 pm ET on ESPN.

The Crimson Tide have already put together some excellent results this season, playing one of the more difficult non-conference schedules on offer.

Already the team has racked up wins over No. 25 Illinois and No. 6 Houston, playing in a variety of in-season tournament events. The game against Illinois was part of the C.M. Newton Classic, while the Houston game came as part of the Players Era Festival – Impact Tournament.
