Malachi Moore reveals Alabama's defense has asked Kane Wommack to get play calls in quicker
One of the big offseason changes in college football was helmet communication, allowing an offensive and defensive player to hear from coaches. This has led to a different strategy level for some play-callers and in Tuscaloosa, the players are asking for changes. After five games, Malachi Moore revealed they want Kane Wommack to get the calls in a little earlier.
“I think, sometimes, we get the call in a little late,” Moore said. “It gives us a little anxiety of not knowing what the offense finna run or adjusting to their formations. Coach Wo, that’s kind of his style of calling, trying to put us in a perfect position. He knows he’s at Bama now and has a lot of pieces so he doesn’t have to compensate for anything, as long as he gets us a call and allows us to get our feet dirty, we’re going to be great.”
Now, Moore does not wear the green dot for Alabama. That honor goes to linebacker Deonate Lawson, another long-time leader for the Crimson Tide. He gets the call from Wommack before relaying information to his defensive line, fellow linebackers, and the entire secondary.
After talking about the process with the entire defense, Moore made the suggestion to Wommack. Credit was given to everyone involved for being able to adapt, allowing Alabama defenders to settle in before the ball is snapped.

“I think that’s the feedback I got from the d-line, all the way back to the secondary,” Moore said. “We feel like get to call in just a little bit quicker, gives us time to line up and go with the man in front of us.”
The changes come right after Alabama’s loss to Vanderbilt, a tough one for the program. The Commodores controlled much of the game too as Wommack’s defense has been a huge talking point the past few days.
Getting to work out the new play-calling strategy at home will certainly help, facing South Carolina on Saturday with an 11 a.m. kickoff.
