Miss Terry opens up on how Nick Saban has handled loss in Rose Bowl
Miss Terry watched Alabama fall to Michigan in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day. For her, it was a heartbreaking loss that ended the 2023 season a game shy of a national championship. Still, she was there for Nick Saban as he walked away from his press conference after the game.
In the aftermath, Miss Terry shared with USA Today Sports about how their conversation went in that moment.
She asked him, “Do you want to watch the other football game?”
The answer was that he didn’t really want to watch another one. That would have been tough to do in the wake of the loss. So, Miss Terry told him simply, “OK, let’s watch Netflix.’’
Apparently, the couple has been watching a Turkish film. She believes that the foreign language film is helpful for Saban because it forces him to focus on the movie and not let his mind wander to other things, like what happened in the Rose Bowl.
“It completely gets your mind off of [the defeat],’’ she added.
Miss Terry also made sure to say that Saban is going to be alright. He’s been doing this for a long time and knows how to handle it, even if the loss really does hurt in the moment.
“Fifty-two years of doing it, we’ve experienced it before, right? And you try to find the silver lining to teach other players for the next time,” Miss Terry said.

Now 72 years old, there are questions about how long Nick Saban is going to continue to coach. Ultimately, nobody knows how long that will be other than Miss Terry and himself. Still, most people do assume that he wouldn’t want to go out on a loss and he certainly seemed to enjoy coaching this year. However, he still also hasn’t addressed his plans for the future.
Nick Saban shares funny story about how he and Miss Terry celebrate wins
After the miracle win in the Iron Bowl, Nick Saban shared a funny story about how he and Miss Terry like to celebrate wins together. Interestingly enough, it’s the same way they handle a loss, by watching a foreign show or movie on Netflix.
“You know, you put me on the spot here. I think you should ask her. Anyway. We always enjoy the time we spend together. We don’t get very much time to spend. Obviously, when you don’t have success it’s not much fun. But when we do, we enjoy it. We actually have an enjoyable ride home. We have a favorite song that we listen to. We usually talk a little bit about the game and some of the things that happened in the game. And maybe things that, you know, we could’ve done differently, or whatever,” Saban said.
“And then, we usually just do something to try to take our mind off of it. Sometimes we watch football games a little bit. If we played in the daytime and there’s some on at night. And then, when we get sick of that, which doesn’t take me long sometimes after all week. We’ll watch something on Netflix and she’s responsible for that. She picks that out. So, Netflix, Amazon, or whatever, so. I can’t even tell you the name of it. It’s an Italian inspector, that’s all I know.”
