Alabama finished its regular season with a dud, dropping a game to Texas A&M on the road. While the outright SEC Championship was already on lock, there is still NCAA Tournament seeding to play for. Favorable home crowds are at stake, especially with a traveling fanbase like the one in Tuscaloosa.

Entering today, the Crimson held the No. 1 overall spot according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi. Saturday’s loss in College Station immediately dropped them from that spot, placing Kansas there instead. However, the Jayhawks are currently battling Texas and at the time of posting, losing.

“Alabama’s loss elevates Kansas to the No. 1 overall seed,” Lunardi said. “If Kansas loses at Texas in the game underway, Alabama and KU will be re-evaluated together with the Jayhawks holding the slight edge.”

The resume Kansas has put together is nothing short of amazing. They currently have 15 Quad 1 wins, more than anyone in the country. Just one loss has come at Allen Fieldhouse and while that’s nothing new, head coach Bill Self has once again performed well in front of the home crowd.

Many consider the Big 12 college basketball’s best conference and a lot of metrics back it up. Kansas getting an outright title will go a long way as well, no matter how the conference tournament in Kansas City winds up.

Alabama does not have a shabby argument for the top spot either. Their nonconference schedule was impressive before losing just twice during SEC play. Only nine Quad 1 wins are there but the Crimson Tide are undefeated against the other three levels.

Even if Kansas does end up losing to Texas, Alabama would likely need to make a deep run in the SEC Tournament while the Jayhawks lose early to reclaim the top spot. A lot to be played for during conference tournament week.
