The Heisman Trophy will be staying in Tuscaloosa for another season, with Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young winning the award on Saturday. Last season, it was wide receiver DeVonta Smith, making it back to back Heisman winners for the program.

Finishing second in the vote for the 2020 award was Alabama quarterback Mac Jones. He spent last season as the starter with Young learning from his during a national championship-winning season.

Jones was asked for a reaction on Young winning the Heisman. The now New England Patriots quarterback had nothing but positive words to say.

“We’re close,” Jones told the media on Monday. “I text him probably once a week or more than that. I am super happy for him and his family. He definitely deserves it.”

Both have played in 13 games in their respective seasons, with Jones slightly holding the lead in passing yards. He finished with 4,500 yards dead-on, while Young is at 4,223. The California native has the advantage in touchdown passes, throwing for 43 while Jones had 41. Both threw four interceptions as well.

Bryce Young talks relationship with Mac Jones

Before winning the Heisman on Saturday, Young had the opportunity to speak on what his relationship with Jones meant to him. Young credited him for being the introduction he needed to college football.

“I learned a lot from him,” Young said of Jones. “For me, being a freshman, Mac being there and being such an experienced, veteran leader, having the amazing season like he did — for that being my intro to college football, I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the sport. For him to have all the success he did last year, and for me to be able to sit back and watch what it took behind the scenes, all the hard work, all the preparation, added to the leadership that group had and Mac had.

“For me to understand the standard that we set at the university, it helped me develop tremendously being able to learn from him.”

Thanks to Jones, Young has become a better leader in those crunch-time moments. All the while, he has become a more confident quarterback in Alabama’s offense.

“I think you have to have confidence in yourself to play at this level and to be successful,” Young said Friday. “For me, the confidence came from work that you put in in the offseason, during the season or whatever it is. Seeing the people around, seeing how hard my teammates are working, seeing how hard the coaches are working, what goes into it that not everyone gets to see.”
