During the Iron Bowl on Saturday, Nick Saban got nicked up. The Alabama head coach appeared to take a shoulder pad to the face, resulting in a bloody cheek on the sideline.

As he walked into the postgame press conference — his left cheek still bruised and bloodied — Saban wasted no time addressing his appearance.

“Before you ask, you ought to see the other guy,” Saban joked.

It didn’t impact Saban’s performance on the sidelines, though. He helped lead Alabama to a resounding 49-27 victory over Auburn to secure another 10-win season. The Crimson Tide might find themselves on the outside looking in of the College Football Playoff, but it was still another big year in Tuscaloosa.

How Nick Saban suffered a cut on his cheek during the Iron Bowl

The annual Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn has claimed quite a few injury victims already and nobody is immune from the carnage. TV cameras caught Alabama coach Nick Saban bleeding from his left cheek, and the CBS broadcast crew followed up.

Sideline reporter Jenny Dell chimed in with an injury report on the Alabama head coach.

“Well there’s a little bit of blood on Nick Saban’s cheek, so I had to do some investigating,” Dell reported. “Turns out he got scraped by a player’s shoulder pad, but don’t worry, Alabama’s medical staff, they said he’s good to return.”

Following the update, the broadcast booth had a good laugh.

“Just rub a little dirt on it, Nick, it’ll be OK,” Brad Nessler said.

Saban’s bleeding cheek wasn’t the only injury update CBS provided during the annual Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn. About a half-dozen players have already been injured in the contest.

Auburn pass-rusher Derick Hall briefly left the game in the first quarter after his left arm was stepped on following a play. He later returned to action.

“For Derick Hall for Auburn, his mom was standing right next to me at the fence,” Dell reported. “The trainers came over, said he was stepped on. But he’s been playing through pain. They wrapped up that left forearm, guys.”
