For years, teams have been attempting to catch Nick Saban at Alabama. But time after time, he has been able to fend off opponents and continue to win national championships. The likes of Auburn, Clemson, and LSU have been rivals over the years and made up for some huge matchups. Recently, it’s been the Georgia Bulldogs and head coach Kirby Smart.

Two consecutive national championships have been brought home to Athens. One was a head-to-head win over Alabama, taking the Tide down in early 2022 in Indianapolis. A day every Georgia fan will remember, making the title much sweet due to Saban being on the losing end.

A dynasty may be budding for Georgia but Saban is looking to put an end to it this season. He said Alabama will be trying to “take it back” when it comes to being college football’s premier program. In fact, he is currently reading a book on the historical dynasties being taken away.

“That’s been the case for a while now,” Saban said during an appearance on The Next Round. “The last couple years somebody has been successful…so we need to try to take it back.”

Saban went into more detail on the book he is reading and explained the thought process behind it. He will be able to take the lessons learned, despite having nothing to do with college football, and relay the message to his team heading into the 2023 season.

“I read a lot of coaching books, but I think the one that impacted me the most philosophically is John Wooden’s old book about process and this pyramid of success and all that,” Saban said. “But I’m reading one now that is very interesting to me because I like history and I like cultural things: The End of the World Is Just the Beginning. And it’s a very interesting book because it talks about cultures, how they develop, why they develop because of circumstances, how people try to – if you could develop something – somebody would try to take it from you.

“And how that historically sort of developed all the cultures through time, and how it’s impacting us now, and the cultures we have to live in the future. So pretty interesting – to me at least – probably boring to most people.”

Alabama looking to reclaim dynasty status

Since Saban took over in 2007, the program’s longest stretch without a national championship has been two seasons. It’s happening for a fourth time and in the previous three, Alabama has been able to get back on top of the college football world. Never have we seen a three-year drought under Saban.

Alabama and Georgia are not scheduled to face off against one another this season… for the time being. You might consider them favorites to win their respective divisions and once again meet in Atlanta for the SEC Championship game. Saban has fared well against UGA in that particular matchup, currently sitting with a 3-0 record.

For now, all we have is spring practice. Alabama is scheduled to host A-Day on Saturday, while Georgia wrapped things up this past weekend. By the time December rolls around, we might be having serious dynasty implications on the line between the two programs.
