The Alabama Crimson Tide started freshman Kobe Prentice on Saturday versus Utah State alongside junior Traeshon Holden and UGA transfer Jermaine Burton. It was a major vote of confidence for the 2022 signee after he showed sparks early in fall camp.

In game one in Tuscaloosa, Prentice had five receptions for 60 yards, including a deep reception for 25 yards. His fellow starters also had five catches but they both scored two touchdowns while the freshman is still chasing his first.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban discussed his takeaways from Prentice’s performance on Saturday night.

“Kobe has done a really good job, he did a great job in the game,” Saban said in his press conference after the win. “He’s got an opportunity because JoJo (Earle) got hurt… he took advantage of it. He’s a bright guy, he’s got really good speed, really good hands, he’s exactly what we look for to play in the slot.”

Prentice leads freshmen in Crimson Tide opener

In the shutout that the Crimson Tide pitched versus Utah State, 11 different players notched receptions. Prentice’s 2022 classmate Isaiah Bond contributed two catches for 23 yards.

“Kobe’s the guy that opportunity because somebody got hurt and he’s certainly taken advantage of it and played very well,” Saban continued. “The freshmen receivers got to play… All those guys are guys that can develop to help us this year… I’m happy that everybody got opportunities.”

Coming out of Calera High School, Prentice was a four-star prospect with 22 offers to choose from. He was the No. 72 prospect in the nation in the 2022 class, according to the On3 Consensus. Prentice ranked No. 11 amongst wide receivers.

He committed to the Crimson Tide in the summer before his senior year. After clocking a 4.38 40-yard dash at camp in Tuscaloosa, he landed an offer from Nick Saban. Prentice had been committed to Maryland but flipped his decision after getting the nod from Bama. That choice is serving him well so far early in his career.
