Nick Saban has seen his Alabama squad rebound, change and grow in a huge way after losing a shootout to the now-No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers several weeks ago.

While the Crimson Tide aren’t in the spot they would like to be at this point in the season, Saban praised his group for regrouping since the win and completely changing their mindsets for the second half of the season.

“I think that maybe we got a little bit too focused on winning and not on what you have to do to win, and I think that created a little too much anxiety for us,” Saban told Scott Van Pelt. “I’ve seen our players get back to the basic fundamentals of what you have to do to execute on a consistent basis. And amazingly enough, people are always more apt and willing to do that when a thunderbolt hits them – and there’s nothing like a thunderbolt than losing a big game.”

Saban said the injury to Bryce Young‘s shoulder that caused him to miss two games stifled him offense’s ability to develop. Since Young’s return, he’s been preaching the basics and have gotten back on track despite the slip up at Tennessee.

Since the loss to the Vols, Alabama took down a ranked Mississippi State team 30-6, and have another tall task on the road at No. 10 LSU this weekend. Follow that up with a battle at No. 11 Ole Miss, and three consecutive ranked wins should more than make up for the loss to the new No. 1 team in the country in the eyes of the College Football Playoff committee.

Still, there’s a lot of football to be played this season, and the SEC West is up for grabs featuring a three-way tie between the Tide, Tigers and Rebels. If Saban’s team can get back to the way they were before the loss to the Vols, smart money should be Alabama to come out on the other side, ready for yet another College Football Playoff berth.
