Paul Finebaum calls Alabama the biggest disappointment of this college football season
Only two weeks after Alabama defeated Georgia, Paul Finebaum has changed his tune on the Crimson Tide. On Sunday, ESPN’s Matt Barrie asked Finebaum which team has been the biggest disappointment this season and the SEC Network analyst didn’t hesitate to tear into Alabama.
“I am going to surprisingly go Alabama,” Finebaum said. “They have what the biggest win of the year in college football, but it proves somewhat fraudulent to me because of what I thought they would be, and what I think they’re going to end up being.”
It’s been a tumultuous three weeks for the Crimson Tide. In Week 5, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer made a statement with a 41-34 shootout win over No. 1 Georgia. Alabama looked dominant early against the Bulldogs, boasting a 30-7 lead at halftime.
However, the Crimson Tide sputtered in the second half, nearly blowing their massive lead. Of course, it’s easy to forget about a few miscues when the team still secures the win. In one night, Alabama ascended to the top of the college football world.
Only a week later, the Crimson Tide came crashing down in a stunning 40-35 loss to Vanderbilt. The loss was a stark contrast from Alabama’s performance only a week earlier and, notably, past years.

‘Bama didn’t put any concerns about its defense to rest this past weekend when it narrowly defeated South Carolina 27-25. The Gamecocks outgained the Crimson Tide in the loss but committed four turnovers, ultimately resulting in a loss.
With Tennessee, Missouri and LSU ahead, Alabama’s schedule isn’t about to get any easier. Alas, the Crimson Tide could use the string of difficult foes to prove Finebaum wrong. Only time will tell how Alabama will respond to its recent shortcomings.
On Saturday, Alabama will square off against No. 11 Tennessee at 3:30 p.m. ET. The game will air live on ABC.
