Paul Finebaum credits Tommy Rees, Jalen Milroe for their evolution of Alabama offense
After being arguably the biggest point of criticism on Alabama‘s team to start the season, the Crimson Tide offense has turned things around fresh off of a dominant 42-28 win over LSU this past weekend.
Alabama had to make changes at the offensive coordinator and quarterback positions this offseason, hiring former Notre Dame play caller Tommy Rees and Jalen Milroe eventually winning the team’s starting job under center. And after their biggest scoring performance since Week 1 against Middle Tennessee State, college football analyst Paul Finebaum discussed Alabama’s offensive evolution on ‘McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning’.
“Night and day does not give it the proper description Greg when you consider where we were, not to go back to that,” Finebaum said. “But it’s an evolution and you’ve seen it up close and how these things happen week to week. The coaching staff showed patience after they were impatient and Jalen Milroe’s delivered and he’s capable of doing many many things.”
After the Crimson Tide came up short versus Texas in their second game of the season where Milroe threw two interceptions and was sacked five times, he did not see the field in their next game versus USF. Quarterbacks Tyler Buchner and Ty Simpson played instead in what was a disastrous offensive performance for Alabama, leaving Tampa with an uncharacteristic 17-3 win over the Bulls.
From that game forward Milroe officially was handed the keys to Alabama’s offense, and week after week he’s continued to grow and evolve alongside Alabama’s offensive playbook curated by Rees and the Crimson Tide coaching staff.

He still isn’t a perfect player, but this weekend was the culmination of Milroe’s growth, as he earned SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week after generating 374 yards of total offense versus the Tigers and became the first Alabama quarterback in school history to rush for four touchdowns in a single game.
“I know a lot of fans still cringe a couple times a game, but that happens to every quarterback. So I think these next couple weeks are gonna be interesting just to see how this team glides towards what is trending as the biggest game in the SEC and that’s the one that’s not even on the schedule in Atlanta,” Finebaum said.
Through their ups and downs, the Crimson Tide have been able to remain undefeated in conference play this season, looking poised for an SEC Championship appearance following the regular season with an offense that’s starting to surely look the part as well.
