Paul Finebaum explains what Brad Bohannon firing does to perception of Alabama athletics
Alabama fired baseball coach Brad Bohannon amid a betting scandal and Paul Finebaum explained what it did to the perception of the athletics department.
The Crimson Tide managed to take two of three from Vanderbilt at home over the weekend following the sweep at the hands of LSU. Interim coach Jason Jackson steered the ship, but Finebaum still had questions about Alabama.
He joined McElroy and Cubelic to explain what the scandal did to Alabama athletics.
“I think the best news, so far, is that it seems to be contained to one person and that’s the coach,” Finebaum said. “If we were talking about a much wider breadth scandal, I think we would be in a different place right now. So if there can be good news and an ugly scandal, that is it. The thing that concerns a lot of people with whom I speak, is just the overall perception and image right now is the University of Alabama athletics department.
“I know that’s painting a broad brush and you guys better than anyone know the litany of things that have happened, some directly under the athletic department, some outlier situations, but it doesn’t scrape away the fact that this athletic department looks very bad right now. There’s a very dark cloud hovering over it.”
The Ohio Casino Control Commission first reported “suspicious wagering activity” at the BetMGM sportsbook at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, involving the Alabama-LSU game on Friday and multiple states began to halt bets on Alabama baseball, according to ESPN.

According to Ronnie Johns, the chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board, via a report from NOLA.com, two bets were under scrutiny, including one large bet.
“People for the first time are questioning the leadership of the person in charge Greg Byrne,” Finebaum said. “And that’s a surprise since until sometime until recently, he was considered among the the top people in that space but with the (Brandon) Miller situation going sideways and a couple of other things happening, and especially this, serious questions are being asked and so far we haven’t heard from him.
“I doubt we’ll hear much from him because we haven’t really heard from him hardly at all this year and that is a stark contrast to a very chatty and amenable Greg Bryne in the past.”
