Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding has faced his fair share of both criticism and praise over the past several years working under Nick Saban. However, after Saturday’s close win over Texas, the words of one caller on the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum Show set off a big reaction from another caller named Skip.

The caveat being that Skip happens to be Pete Golding’s father. In an awkward on-air response, he threatened another caller going by the name “Legend” for his harsh thoughts about both Alabama coordinators.

“Give me his address,” Skip Golding told Paul Finebaum. “I’ll meet his ass because I ain’t scared. I’m from south Miami.”

At the end of the call, Finebaum confronted Skip Golding on his threats, asking if he was serious.

“I wouldn’t give that man the time of day,” Golding said. “If I had to, I damn sure would. He’s not worth it. That’s what Pete’s told me. ‘He’s not worth listening to, so forget him, dad.’ Sometimes I can. Sometimes I can’t because Pete would kill me.”

While it likely goes without saying, Skip made sure on his way out that listeners knew his call was not approved by Pete Golding and would not go over well.

“I’m sure he’ll call me and not be very happy I called you,” Golding said.

After the show, reporters from AL.com reached out to Paul Finebaum to gather further information on the call and the threats made. While the veteran radio host has handled many on-air spats before, including a few on Tuesday’s show, he painted a serious picture of the event.

“I think it was pretty clear what he was saying,” Finebaum told AL.com. “I think because we’ve down this road before I was trying to get him to kind of walk it back a bit. I don’t know if he really did or not. He sounded initially like he was serious. You tell me?

“He was not joking around. I was just trying to calm the waters a little bit. A lot of people think we are trying to egg things on. We’re not. We realize there are a lot of people listening or watching. We’re not trying to encourage a father of an Alabama coach to challenge a caller, especially one that is apparently legendary.”

Pete Golding is entering his fifth season as defensive coordinator at Alabama and has been named a potential candidate for head coaching vacancies as recently as last offseason.
