Rece Davis lists Dylan Lonergan as an Alabama quarterback to keep an eye on
Alabama is currently in the midst of a quarterback competition with three quarterbacks seemingly competing for playing time. However, ESPN college football analyst Rece Davis thinks that another quarterback, Dylan Lonergan may end up being a player who makes an impact for Alabama.
As Davis explained, if one of the more experienced quarterbacks doesn’t take the job, head coach Nick Saban may need to turn to Lonergan.
“If they don’t get it solved early, in terms of somebody to use the Saban vernacular if no one takes the bull by the horns at quarterback down the line, keep an eye on true freshman Dylan Lonergan,” Rece Davis said. “Who probably has thrown the ball as well or better than any of them but, he was in for Spring, but he’s a freshman.”
According to the On3 Industry Rankings, Dylan Lonergan was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023. and the 13th-ranked quarterback overall.
Because of Lonergan’s youth, Rece Davis doesn’t expect him to play much unless something goes wrong for the Crimson Tide. At the same time, he’s a good name to an eye on down the road.
“That would be down the line and would probably indicate that things had not gone well at that position, but I think they’ll start with [Jalen] Milroe.”

Recently, Nick Saban even praised Dylan Lonergan to this point in Fall Camp.
“He’s done really well. He shows great ability, great potential. I think the thing that he needs is experience… He’s a talented guy. Certainly, a guy that we want to try to continue to develop. But he’s done a nice job so far in camp,” Saban said.
“Everybody says ‘What’s experience? What’s your ability to self-assess?’ I have better ability to self-assess right now than when I was 18. So, how do you learn to do that? Through experience. You have experiences, you make mistakes, you mess up… That’s how you learn and progress.”
Rece Davis thinks Alabama is winning under 10.5 games
While picking the win total for Alabama this season, Pete Thamel chose the under and Rece Davis agreed with him, predicting the Crimson Tide to only win 10 games.
“I am too, by a half game,” Davis said.
“I’m going to say a couple of losses find them while they’re trying to sort things out. I think by the end, if they develop, if they get to the SEC Championship Game with those two losses they’ll give Georgia a handful. But I think there’s going to be some growing pains. I’m going to take the under at 10.5 and say 10 on the nose is where they wind up.”
