Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn has many goals for his Crimson Tide program. But there are things ranked above the rest that he wants the team to be known for during his tenure leading the team.

“I want our program to be known about two things,” Vaughn said during his introductory press conference last month. “The two most important things for me is culture and development. Culture and development, it’s what we’re all about. It’s what I care about. This sounds super cliche to everybody involved but my goal is that this group of people that I get to coach and we get to work alongside one day finish their time here and are equipped to be unbelievable dads one day, unbelievable husbands one day and unbelievable leaders.”

The 35-year-old Vaughn arrived in Tuscaloosa, Ala., after six seasons at Maryland, where he led the team to three NCAA Regional appearances over the past three seasons.

The Terrapins won the Big Ten regular season title in both 2022 and 2023, which were the first conference titles for the program since 1971. Maryland also won the 2023 Big Ten conference tournament. Those accomplishments led to Vaughn winning back-to-back Big Ten Coach of the Year awards the past two seasons.

He takes over an Alabama program that has made the NCAA Tournament twice since the start of the 2015 season. That includes a trip this year to the Super Regional round despite a midseason coaching change that threatened to upend the entire season.

Vaughn will look to bring the Crimson Tide back to Omaha for the Men’s College World Series for the first time since 1999 and then hopefully lift the national title trophy for the first time ever. But he also has other off-the-field goals he wants to see his program achieve in terms of building his players to be good men.

“This isn’t popular, but I will tell everybody, this world doesn’t need another shortstop,” Vaughn said. “Don’t worry, I will find good shortstops and we will have those here. But this world’s gonna keep spinning without it. But what we desperately need is men and women that know how to lead, that lead their families, that are people of character, that know how to lead communities. That’s desperately what they need and that’s what our program is going to be built on. That’s what we’re going to be all about. We’re going to be about building those things.”
