Roman Harper, Jackie Sherrill and Gerald Wallace inducted into Alabama Sports Hall of Fame
Three former Alabama athletes were inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame this weekend, The Tuscaloosa News reported. Former Crimson Tide football players Roman Harper and Jackie Sherrill joined basketball star Gerald Wallace as inductees.
Harper played high school football in Pratville, Alabama, before going on to star as a safety for the Crimson Tide from 2002-05. He finished his career with 302 tackles, five interceptions, five forced fumbles and 3.5 sacks and was named first team All-SEC as a senior in 2005.
From there, Harper went on to enjoy an 11-year career in the NFL, playing all but two of those seasons with the New Orleans Saints. Harper won a Super Bowl with the Saints in 2010 and now works as an analyst for the SEC Network.
Sherrill played under legendary Alabama football coach Bear Bryant and was a part of national championship wins in 1964 and 1965. He later spent more than 25 years as a head coach with stops as Washington State, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and Mississippi State. Sherrill helped lead Pittsburgh to an 33-3 record from 1979-81 and was named the Walter Camp Coach of the Year in 1981 while leading the Panthers to a 24-20 victory against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

The coach moved on to Texas A&M after that season and went 52-28 over seven seasons with the Aggies. He helped the team to win three straight Southwest Conference championships from 1985-87. After that, Sherrill spent 13 seasons at Mississippi State before retiring in 2003. He ended his coaching career with a 179-121-4 overall record, including 8-6 in bowl games. He is one of only two Division I coaches in history to lead three different programs to at least one 10-win season.
Finally, Wallace played high school basketball in Childersburg, Alabama and then spent just one season with the Crimson Tide in 2000-01. He averaged 9.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.0 blocks to earn SEC All-Freshman honors. The 6-foot-7 forward went on to become a first-round pick in the 2001 NBA Draft and play 14 seasons in the league. Highly regarded for his defensive ability, Wallace was named first team NBA All-Defense in the 2009-10 season and also played in the All-Star game that year.
Former Auburn linebacker Karlos Dansby and UAB receiver Roddy White are among some of the other 2023 Alabama Sports Hall of Fame inductees. The induction banquet and ceremony took place Saturday evening at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel.
