Alabama has no choice but to overhaul its offense after losing the two best players in the unit after the 2022 season. Both quarterback Bryce Young and running back Jahmyr Gibbs are headed to the pros after a tremendous season together in Tuscaloosa.

After finally saying goodbye to their generation of superstar wideouts, Alabama won’t have a first round pick at receiver for the first time in four years. So, with a substantial drop-off at wideout, Gibbs became one of the primary passing options for Alabama as well has its bell cow rusher. His loss is immense, and with a young quarterback and receiving corps for the upcoming season, Nick Saban is going to need one of his vintage running back rooms to carry the load on offense.

Perhaps guys like Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams can be the next in a long lineage of dominant running back tandems. At spring practice media availability recently, Williams discussed how the new RB room is coming along now that the keys have been handed over to him a couple other veterans.

“Everyone’s doing good, everyone’s catching on to the offense pretty well,” said Williams of the backs. “A lot of versatile guys in the room, being able to catch out of the backfield, running with speed and power. Everyone overall is doing very, very good.”

Nothing to shout from the mountaintop there from Williams, since you’d expect a positive answer like that. However, he did reveal that the Alabama offense as a whole is still working on the details right now rather than the big picture stuff.

“We’re looking pretty good,” Williams said. “Of course, we still have some stuff to work on. Working on the pre-snap penalties. Just all the little small things. It’s not really that much, but we looked pretty good.”

Looking pretty good is better than looking bad. As for Williams himself, he’ll be a senior this coming fall and will likely get his shot at major ball carrying duties. The last two years, Williams was on the precipice of such responsibilities, finishing third on the team in rushing yards and scoring six touchdowns since the start of the 2021 season. He’s been a steady depth piece in the backfield who is now looking to break out as a senior in 2023.

Alabama could definitely use the boost. They just don’t seem to have the established stars on offense that they’ve had in the past. Surely Roydell Williams will prove that narrative wrong.
