Roydell Williams says Alabama's offense still working on 'the small things'
After an offseason of changes, Alabama running back Roydell Williams says that the Crimson Tide offense is still working on some of the small things.
The Crimson Tide offense is going through several major transitions this offseason. Along with several key starters like Bryce Young and Jahmyr Gibbs moving on to the NFL, Tommy Rees has also joined Alabama as a new offensive coordinator.
“We’re looking pretty good,” Roydell Williams said. “Of course, we still have some stuff to work on. Working on the pre-snap penalties. Just all the little small things. It’s not really that much, but we looked pretty good.”
While he was at Notre Dame, Tommy Rees became known for his power running offenses. However, whether that was because of personnel or because that’s the offense he really wanted to run was always unclear. Either way, at Alabama, the up-and-coming coordinator will have plenty of talent to work with.
On top of that, head coach Nick Saban notably makes his coordinators change the language of their systems to match what Alabama already does, not the other way around. This makes it easier to learn a new system.
Roydell Williams pointed out that Alabama is still working on pre-snap penalties. Given the new system and new quarterback, this probably shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. However, it’s still something that needs to be ironed out before the season kicks off.

In this offseason of transition on offense, Roydell Williams himself is hoping to be given a lot of the opportunities that Jahmyr Gibbs had in 2022.
Roydell Williams on his injury recovery
Unfortunately, Roydell Williams has suffered a series of injuries throughout his career, including one that ended his 2021 season. Earlier this offseason, Nick Saban announced that Williams was going to miss time due to another injury.
Roydell Williams spoke about the process of recovering from that injury.
“I’m feeling great,” Roydell Williams said.
“I’ve spent a lot of time downstairs in the training room with those guys and I spend every day with them. So, it’s like I’ve built a relationship with them and everything is going good.”
Neither Williams nor Saban chose to specify the injury that Williams was suffering from. However, it appears that he should be good to go moving forward.
