Tim Tebow breaks down how Tommy Rees, Alabama offense have grown in Year 1
The Alabama offense has, at times, been an adventure in 2023. But there’s little doubt that the unit set to take the field against Tennessee in Bryant-Denny Stadium in Week 8 is much improved from the unit that started off the season.
And it’s been a steady attack for the Crimson Tide, which averages a shade more than 28 points per game this season. Joining the “Paul Finebaum Show” on Friday, Tim Tebow shared what he’s seen in terms of growth from new coordinator Tommy Rees and the Alabama offense.
“I think he’s improving as a play caller because he’s getting more used to his team. I think his team is also getting more used to him. There’s a mesh that has to happen with a quarterback and a play caller. With an offense and a play caller. You get used to your guys, what do they do well. What are they comfortable with. And what is that merging situation like?” Tebow said.
Save for two scoring outbursts — 56 and 40 — Alabama has finished every game around the 20 point range, give or take a score. But with a stout defense, that’s been good enough for the Crimson Tide to reel off a one-loss record to this point.
And Tebow lauded Rees and the Alabama offense for shining in situational football.
“I think they’re continuing to improve and especially in the important plays. Against Texas A&M, the second half and the third down and I love what he did in the red zone,” Tebow said. “And then this last week, they didn’t have the second half they wanted to but I love the drive that put it away at the end. He trusted Jalen Milroe. Jalen Milroe getting hit in the face came up with a really good crossing route over a backer, in front of the safety, a great play. So he’s making calls that he likes but at the same time, his players trust.

Tebow also shared how Tennessee can get the win
Tebow examined what Volunteers quarterback Joe Milton must improve on if he’s to lead his team to victory.
First, Tebow explained that while he sees Milton’s unlimited potential at the moment, he believes the routine must become easier for Milton and Tennessee to be successful.
“When I look at Joe, I still see someone that’s talent is off the charts, and he makes some great plays here and there, it’s just got to be more often,” Tebow said. “Then he’s got to make the plays that most quarterback’s can make. He’s got to make those routine plays, and if he does, then his talent will eventually will take over. But I think because sometimes those aren’t always made, then sometimes there’s that hesitation.
“… I’m hoping for him. He stayed and he bided his time. It’s hard, you get so much flack and I want him to take that next step, I really think it’s inconsistency. That’s the key.”
